The Miller Lites defeated the Novus Seahawks 16-9 in 8 innings. The game was close throughout. The Hawks plated two insurance runs in the 6th to take a 3 run lead into the top of the 7th inning. They were one out away from victory when the bottom fell out of their defense. Two errors with two outs lead to 3 unearned runs for the Lites to tie the game. The Hawks bats, hot all day, fizzled in the bottom of the inning. Then in the extra inning nothing went right for the Hawks and the Lites made them pay scoring 10 runs. The Hawks made a valiant effort in the 8th sending 9 men to the plate but could only score 3 runs as Gary Lanier struck out the last three batter he faced to end the rally.
The Seahawks started fast again scoring 3 runs on 4 hits in the 1st after the Lites scored 1 in the top of the inning. The Lites get closer with unearned run in the 3rd but the Hawks equaled that with one of their own in the 5th. In the 6th inning the Lites scored another unearned run to get within a run. The 2 runs in the 6th came with of the bottom of the order leading the way. Then came the dreadful 7th.
The Hawks pounded out 10 total hits lead by Tom Tarantino (2 for 3, double and 2 RBI), Todd Rehanek (2 for 3, SAC and 3 RBI) and Dwayne Sumrall (2 for 4, double and an RBI). Lanier pitched a complete game for the Lites giving up 8 earned runs while striking out 8 and walking 5 batters.
The Seahawks are back in action for the regular season finale Saturday July 17 against the Miller Lites in the 4:00 game at Godwin Park.
